The shipyard's hanger was only lit at floor level and being fully enclosed above the barge, the internal light was dingy at best. The poorly ventilated inside air was often filled with a smoky fog of acrid burnt mist, compounded on the inside of Vitesse by fumes given off from melting bilge protection grease on the internal side of the hull, where welding was taking place outside.
