After a short voyage and my first ever attempt at piloting a barge (or any other boat for that matter), we arrived at the 'Yachtwerf Wartena' shipyard. Vitesse was carefully turned perpendicular to the shore and after roping her bow to a post attached to one of two accurately positioned underwater bogies, she was gently drawn up the slipway and on to dry land. It was at this moment when I realised just how huge this barge really was. So large in fact that the worry of what I'd got myself into made me extremely nauseous! Another thing that struck me was just how little of her was actually under the water. Immediately she was high and dry, one of the shipyard workers began cleaning her hull with a high pressure jet washer. The surveyor had requested she be clean and dry for the following days survey. |
