The survey was over and almost immediately I was presented with an immaculately presented print out of the survey results. The owner would have to cough up over seven thousand euro for necessary repairs which included plating, new propeller shaft and a completely new rudder. You can see in the above picture that Vitesse's old rudder had already been repaired / enlarged once, but this time it had been condemned due to water leaking from the inside out. The owner was not a happy man and had considered organising another surveyor to challenge my surveyors findings. This however would have caused weeks of delay with the sale and that was time he didn't have. After many anxious minutes and much thumb twiddling, he agreed to proceed with the deal. A celebratory beer was in order and the handover meeting at the Notary in Groningen was scheduled for the morrow. In the run up to the survey, I had transferred the full asking price to the Notary in readiness for what we both hoped would be a satisfactory outcome of the survey. The Notary would pay Vitesse's old owner the full price MINUS the amount required for the repairs. The shipyard would then bill the Notary for that withheld amount, but only after I signed to say that I was happy with the repairs they'd carried out.
