Nilaya's bronze propellerThe sharing of costs by friends old and new makes Nilaya’s continued exploration of the beautiful canals of France and Europe possible. Running an 86-year-old steel barge such as Nilaya requires a not inconsiderable amount of money. 

She demands constant day-to-day maintenance and provision toward four yearly safety surveys, hull cleaning and painting (which requires lifting Nilaya from the water) together with Barge Nilaya being gently winched out of the water the insurance, equipment, (ropes, fenders etc.) waterway licenses, expensive 'white' road diesel, food, drinks, mooring, water and electricity fees, that make cruising European waterways possible.
